General Counsel
Joseph Wayland is Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary. He joined the company, then ACE, as General Counsel in 2013. He is responsible for the company’s global legal affairs and serves as principal counsel to the CEO, senior management team and Board of Directors. Mr. Wayland also oversees the company’s compliance, government affairs, global safety and security, and climate functions.
Before joining the company, Mr. Wayland was a partner at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, which he joined in 1988. From 2010 to 2012, he served in the United States Department of Justice, first as Deputy Assistant Attorney General responsible for litigation for the Antitrust Division, and later as the Acting Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Division. From 1984 to 1988, Mr. Wayland served on active duty as a Captain in the United States Air Force.
Mr. Wayland is a trustee of Washington University, Ballet Hispanico and Uncommon New York, a charter school organization serving Brooklyn, NY.
Mr. Wayland holds a Juris Doctor degree from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington University. He also holds a Master of Laws degree in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University.
Mr. Wayland is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
